Father Daniel L. Mode, an Arlington diocesan priest serving in the Archdiocese for the Military Services, has been named chaplain of the U.S. Coast Guard. He replaces the Rev. Thomas J. Walcott, who is retiring.

Father Mode, a captain in the U.S. Navy, will assume the top Coast Guard chaplain position at a Change of Watch ceremony at Coast Guard Headquarters in Washington April 20.

The Coast Guard chaplain advises commanding officers on religious support and promotes the well-being of all personnel, manages Navy chaplains assigned to the Coast Guard, and ensures personnel and families are provided the full continuum of pastoral care.

Father Mode is author of “The Grunt Padre,” a biography of Vietnam War hero Father Vincent R. Capodanno, which initiated the process for Father Capodanno’s canonization. In 2006, the church officially proclaimed Father Capodanno a servant of God.
