A year after Dobbs, women supported by Catholic ministries

Arlington, Va. - On June 24, 2022, the Supreme Court of the United States overturned Roe v. Wade. In Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization the court ruled that abortion is not a federal right and restored to the individual states the ability to decide their own abortion regulations.

Since then, pro-life advocates around the country have continued to work in countless ways to help women facing unplanned pregnancies, as well as moms and dads who are struggling to meet the needs of their families.

Whether it is by providing prenatal care, diapers, food, housing or job assistance, parishes and ministries in the Catholic Diocese of Arlington continue to walk with pregnant women in need.

The attached infographic illustrates just some of the ways groups within the Diocese have aided mothers, fathers, and families during the past year. Through its various partners, the Diocese of Arlington helps women, men, and their children at every stage of life, from conception to natural death.

Some examples of assistance provided throughout the Diocese include the following:

Gabriel Project “Angels” are parish-based volunteers who accompany pregnant women with emotional, spiritual, and material support. They also continue to support mothers after their babies are born. In some cases, the mother and the “Angel” develop a lifelong friendship.

Many organizations, including high school student groups, organize diaper and bottle drives.

Catholic Charities offers free medical care, adoption support, workforce training, budgeting, and counseling in addition to safe housing alternatives for mothers and their children. Another program provides GED and childcare classes and helps mothers find jobs.

Reporters covering the Dobbs anniversary are invited to use the statistics provided with attribution to the Catholic Diocese of Arlington.

Reporters looking to speak to volunteers who have aided women or who have any questions about the data released should reach out to Mary Shaffrey, director of media relations, at [email protected] or 703-841-2517.
